Where volcanic heat meets green innovation
At Lava Show, we bring Iceland’s raw volcanic power to life — without burning up the planet to do it.
Superheating lava to a molten 1100°C (2000°F) is no small task. It demands energy. But from the beginning, we’ve made a bold choice: to power this world-first experience sustainably. Instead of relying on fossil fuels, we melt our lava using bio-generated methane — renewable energy created from Reykjavík’s household food waste.

From banana peels to molten lava
Thanks to our partnership with SORPA, Reykjavík’s municipal waste management company, we tap into a remarkable local innovation. At SORPA’s GAJA facility, discarded food scraps like banana peels, coffee grounds, and leftovers are transformed into two valuable resources: methane gas and organic compost.
In 2024 alone, GAJA processed over 22,000 tonnes of food waste, preventing the emission of 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents. That’s the climate-saving equivalent of taking 10,000 fossil-fuel cars off the road for a year.
We’re proud to use that clean-burning methane to melt our lava and power the show, proving that high-impact experiences can have low environmental impact.

Nothing Wasted — Even the Lava
But we don’t stop there. The lava itself is remelted again and again, reducing material waste. In fact, it originates from the historic 1918 eruption of Katla, one of Iceland’s most iconic volcanoes. This ancient lava is given new life — again and again — for your awe and education.
And here’s more: the intense heat we generate doesn’t just disappear. We repurpose the excess thermal energy from the lava-melting process to help heat our facilities, further lowering our energy footprint.
