New Podcast Alert: Lava Academy Episode 1 with Geologist Madison McKenzie

We're thrilled to announce the launch of Lava Academy, our brand-new podcast from Lava Show — and what better way to kick things off than with one of our very own in-house geologist and Operations Manager Madison MacKenzie. Joining her in this first episode are hosts Lava Master Ian McKinnon and Sales and Marketing Manager Jón Heiðar Ragnheiðarson.

Madison McKenzie's journey into geology and Iceland’s volcanic landscape

In Episode 1, we sit down with Madison McKenzie, a geologist originally from the U.S. who now calls Iceland home. Madison’s fascination with volcanoes began in childhood, living near some of the world’s most iconic volcanic regions like Mount Fuji in Japan and the Cascade Range in the U.S. Her journey led her to Iceland in 2018, where she dove deep into the island’s fiery landscape through her graduate studies — and eventually joined the Lava Show team.

Volcano Basics explained on Lava Academy Podcast

This episode is the perfect starting point for anyone curious about volcanoes. Madison explains the basics: what volcanoes are, how they form, and why Iceland is one of the most geologically active places on the planet. You’ll also learn the difference between magma and lava, what makes eruptions explosive, and how scientists monitor volcanic activity using cutting-edge technology.

Surprising benefits of volcanic eruptions

One of the episode’s most fascinating insights? Not all eruptions are dangerous — in fact, many are small, predictable, and even beneficial. Volcanic ash enriches soil, making areas around volcanoes surprisingly fertile. It’s just one example of how these powerful natural forces shape life in Iceland and beyond.

Why geology enthusiasts should tune in to Lava Show's Podcast

Whether you're a geology enthusiast, a traveler planning your Iceland adventure, or just someone who loves learning new things, this episode is for you. It’s educational, engaging, and a great way to explore the science behind the spectacle we showcase every day at Lava Show.
