Geologist Jessica Poteet Discusses Lava, and Living in Iceland on the Lava Academy Podcast

In our newest Lava Academy Podcast episode, we are thrilled to welcome Jessica Poteet—a geoscientist, marketing strategist, and one of the most passionate voices in Iceland’s geological community.

Originally from the United States, Jessica first set foot in Iceland in 2017 on a hiking trip. Captivated by the volcanic landscapes, she found herself daydreaming of a life on this remote island. A year later, after leaving a Silicon Valley career behind, she returned with a one-way ticket and a bold new chapter ahead.

As an admin of the Iceland Iceland geology Facebook group, a thriving community of more than 160,000 members—Jessica helps people across the world stay informed about Iceland’s eruptions and volcanic activity. Her unique blend of scientific knowledge and communication skills makes her an invaluable voice in times of uncertainty, when misinformation can spread as quickly as lava itself.

Deep-dive explaination of makes Iceland uniquely volcanic

In this episode, Jessica dives deep into what makes Iceland unlike any other volcanic region on Earth. From the dramatic rift between tectonic plates to the hotspot fueling eruptions, she explains why Iceland is truly a natural laboratory for geologists. She also reflects on recent activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula, sharing insights into how scientists track eruptions and why no eruption-prediction is ever 100% certain.

In the podcast interview Jessica he offers thoughtful advice to both travelers and those dreaming of moving to Iceland: come prepared, and respect nature.

For us at Lava Show, Jessica’s perspective is especially meaningful. She reminds us why Iceland’s volcanic story inspires so many, and why creating safe, accessible experiences with real flowing lava matters.

Hosts of this episode of the Lava Academy Podcast: Iain MacKinnon Lava Master at Lava Show, and Jon Heidar Ragnheidarson, Sales and Marketing Manager at Lava Show.
